Coach Mike McCarthy focused on situational football, specifically the two-minute drill and end-of-game scenarios in the first practice of Steelers training camp at St. Vincent College yesterday.
It was a high-energy session with no downtime between drills, and for a first session under a new head coach, it was very efficient.
It also included a 65-year-field goal by Chris Boswell, and a 63-yard punt by Cameron Johnston.
McCarthy talked about his strategy to move TJ Watt and his fellow linebackers around on the defense. He says that keeps opposing offenses guessing.
McCarthy says the entire team is eager to get onto the practice field every day…even the guys who can’t practice.
The coach opened the camp with a pre-practice speech to set the tone for the camp.
Defensive captain Cam Heyward says it’s a season of change for the Steelers.
Heyward says McCarthy’s speech struck the right chord.
The veteran, who said he intends to play at least two more years, says he has had to learn new ways to go about things under McCarthy’s leadership.
Today’s schedule will follow the same format as yesterday, with morning meetings, a McCarthy media appearance at 11, followed by practice at 11:20.
