River Valley’s acting superintendent has announced that non-toxic white mold was found at Saltsburg Elementary school, but the district has already taken action to remediate it.
In a statement, Regina Geesey said that the district’s maintenance department had been monitoring humidity levels at all the buildings due to the unseasonable humid weather. While no black mold was found at any of the buildings, white mold was found on carpeting and chairs in some of the classrooms at the elementary schools. The district then worked with Fagan Sanitary Supply, the district’s janitorial materials supplier, to remove the affected items and perform a thorough cleaning of the building.
Based on the completed inspection and remediation efforts, the district is satisfied that the building is safe for occupancy. River Valley opened the school year this morning.
This marks the second district in the county to announce problems with mold. Homer-Center discovered mold in the elementary classrooms and they are undergoing a deep cleaning and other remediation efforts. That has delayed the start of classes to September 1st.
