The Homer-Center School District has announced the elementary students will have their first day of school on September 10th.
The delay in the start of class was due to the discovery of aspergillus spores in the elementary building. On August 26th, the district announced that the start of school was delayed as they worked on cleaning the building. The high school building was not affected, and while their school year was delayed a few days, elementary students remained out as cleaning efforts continued. District Superintendent Ralph Cecere said during last night’s planning meeting said that there were a lot of things that contributed to the problem, including a failure of the district’s chiller.
The total cost of the remediation effort is not known, but Cecere is concerned about the cost of repairs to the system. Cecere says they have two main concerns: the roof and the end units of the HVAC equipment.
Cecere added they are still working on how to make sure the elementary grade levels will get the required number of hours of education and that the staff can meet their contractual obligation.
