Wednesday night, the Indiana County Planning Commission voted to table the application for Amazon Web Services to build data centers in Center and Black Lick Townships.
Nearly 100 members of the public were in attendance for the meeting in Courtroom 1 of the Indiana County Courthouse. Before a presentation from AWS, members of the public voiced their opinions on the proposed project. Many of those who spoke were against the project for various reasons ranging from environmental concerns to transparaency to the priorities of a major corporation.
After a presentation from AWS that detailed how they would deal with certain issues like sound and water pollution, along with reiterating that the data centers would generate between 1500 and 2000 jobs, the board decided to table the application from AWS, triggering a 90-day period where the board will thoroughly investigate the matter. Board Chair Laurie Lafontaine said during the meeting that they want to use any and all resources in reaching a final decision.
