Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro announced earlier today that, with the help of local police departments across the state, the Drug Take-Back Program surpassed a milestone following this year’s collection.
Shapiro said in a news conference that more than 200 tons – or 400,000 pounds – of voluntarily-surrendered drugs were collected across Pennsylvania since the start of the program in 2018. That January, Gov. Tom Wolf signed the Pennsylvania Opioid Disaster Declaration into effect so the state could focus on preventing drug-related overdose deaths.
After the declaration was enacted, an 18 percent decrease in overdose deaths was discovered compared to 2017.
Shapiro thanked Pennsylvanians for doing their part in the Take-Back program and added that more prevention initiatives are coming.
