With starter Mason Heintschel gone for the season with a knee injury, true freshman Corel Dailey started for Pitt yesterday at Boston College, and while he got off to a great start, he struggled as the game went on and the Panthers were beaten by the Eagles, 27-21.
Dailey threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Cataurus Hicks on the first play from scrimmage, and Pitt followed that with a safety after Kanye Thompson blocked a punt, which ended up going out of the end zone. Pitt then got a 28-yard field goal from Antonio Chadha to take a 12-0 lead.
But Bo MacCormack II scored on a 1-yard run late in the first quarter, and Mason McKenzie threw touchdown passes in the second and third quarters to put BC up, 21-12. Two field goals by Chadha, from 29 and 42 yards, made it 21-18 Boston College after three quarters, but Evan Dickens ran one in from a yard out early in the fourth, putting BC up 27-18. Chadha kicked a 38-yard field goal later in hte fourth to set the final score at 27-21 Boston College.
Dailey, in his first-ever college start, was 11-for25 for 193 yards and a touchdown and two interceptions. Damon Ferguson Jr. ran for 119 yards, a career-best, for the Panthers.
Pitt plays on Saturday, kicking off at noon at third-ranked Miami.
