On Wednesday, Governor Tom Wolf signed several bills into law, including one that will create a group to help bring broadband internet access to unserved and underserved regions of the state.
House Bill 2071 established the Broadband Development Authority, which is designed to help manage a minimum of $100 million in federal aid the state is set to receive. That money will be used to expand broadband access across state in a coordinated and strategic effort. This includes supporting the construction of new towers, lines and broadband equipment and other uses that follow federal law and guidance. The authority will also guarantee that projects they approve will be done by responsible contractors.
About 800,000 Pennsylvanians lack access to broadband and high speed internet.
