At their special meeting on Monday night, the Indiana Area School Board appointed a new board member to take over for Tamara Leeper, who resigned from her position in April.
Ron Airhart, who served on the board in the mid-2000s, was voted as Leeper’s successor after garnering the necessary five votes for election. Board president Walter Schroth broke down what Airhart will bring to the district.
Board members were presented with nine candidates and were tasked with narrowing down the selection to either three or four, then finally to one. Schroth presented a motion to have all board members select three to four choices, and those who receive five or more nominations would move on to the final selection. Board members approved of this motion.
Choices were narrowed down to Airhart, IUP professor Yaw Asamoah and Bernard Lockard, and after a final vote, Airhart was named the winner.
Schroth thanked everyone who applied and urged anyone who was nominated for this round of voting to apply next time there is an opening.
In other business, the board approved multiple hires for the upcoming Summer Learning Camp Program’s Support Staff, including Kathleen Gibbons as the camp Administrative Assistant, Dawn Balogh as the camp’s Teacher Aide, and six Summer Learning Camp Tutors that will work at a rate of $30 per hour.
