Arnold Palmer Regional Airport near Latrobe has received an additional $2 million in state funding for the terminal expansion project.
State Senator Kim Ward said that the airport authority received the extra money from the state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. This brings the total of RACP funds for the project up to $6.5 million. Westmoreland County Airport Authority Executive Director Gabe Monzo said the extra $2 million “sets the stage for expansion of the terminal facilities at our airport.”
The project will demolish a hangar adjacent to the terminal and build a new terminal that will be twice the size of the current one. The new terminal will provide more space for passengers, add another security gate, and give more space for restaurants and even a small room for a casino on the property. While the airport only has one scheduled commercial carrier, Spirit Airlines, the line for passengers waiting to get through the security check can reportedly back up into the terminal entrance area.
This would be the first major renovation at the airport since 1998, and it’s expected to cost between $22 and $25 million.
