With the cold weather and high winds, conditions could be perfect for power outages in our area. Penelec has notified its customers about the possibility of power outages during the upcoming round of winter storms. They say you can prepare in advance by making sure that your cell phones laptops and other devices are fully charged and having a flashlight, portable radio and extra batteries at the ready. For the cold weather, they recommend extra blankets or a sleeping bag for each person and a supply of convenience foods that do not require cooking and a manual can opener.
If the power does go out, Penelec recommends following the manufacturer’s instructions if you’re using an emergency backup generator. They also advise to keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as food will keep for several hours if the doors are closed as much as possible. They also advise not to use gas stoves charcoal grills or other Open flame heat sources for war as deadly carbon monoxide gas May build up in the Home without you realizing it.
People are also recommended that if the power does go out, report the outage even if you feel your neighbors already have.
