The Pirates set their roster for the Altoona Curve, and it includes some of the organization’s hottest prospects, even if some of them are disappointed to be in Altoona instead of Indianapolis.
Among the top-rated Bucs prospects opening their season playing for the Curve are catcher Henry Davis, baseball’s top overall draft choice in 2021. He’s joined by shortstop Liover Peguero, outfielders Matt Gorski and Matt Fraizer, pitchers Kyle Nicolas and Jared Jones, and first baseman Mason Martin, who played for Indianapolis last season and hit 19 home runs, but batted only .210 and struck out in 36 percent of his at-bats.
The roster features six players ranked in the Pirates’ top 30 prospects by MLB.com and one player ranked among the top 100 prospects in all of Minor League Baseball.
MLB Pipeline ranked Pittsburgh’s minor league system as the eighth-best among all organizations entering 2023.
The Curve opens the season Thursday night at PNG Field against the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
