State police have announced the identities of the trooper who was killed in the line of duty on Saturday and the trooper who was injured in a separate incident involving the same gunman in Juniata County.
State Trooper Jacques Rougeau, Jr. was killed and Lt. James A. Wagner was wounded in separate encounters with 38-year-old Brandon Stine of Thompsontown. Stine pulled up to the Lewistown Barracks of the State Police around 11:00 AM on Saturday and opened fire with a large-caliber rifle on marked patrol cars before fleeing the area. During the manhunt, Stine encountered Wagner in Mifflintown at 12:45 PM and was critically wounded in the shooting. People in the area were able to use his radio to call for help. He was eventually taken to Hershey Medical Center.
Later, Stine allegedly lead Rougeau into an ambush in Walker Township, and killed him with a shot that went through the front windshield. Shortly before 3:00 PM, Stine engaged police in a shootout in a wooded area of the township after ditching the car. Stine was shot and killed in that shootout.
Rougeau, who died at age 29, becomes the 106th state trooper to die in active duty.
