In 1955 Bill Haley and the Comets’ “Rock Around The Clock” hit number one on the pop singles chart and stays there for eight weeks. It was the first rock ‘n’ roll record to top the Billboard charts.
In 1978 Rolling Stones members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and Charlie Watts jammed with Muddy Waters at a club in Chicago.
In 1990 Keith Richards’ right index finger became inflamed after Glasgow concert, requiring hospital treatment. The band’s upcoming six shows were postponed. It was the first time that the Stones miss a show due to a band member’s illness or injury.
In 1994 John Mellencamp’s “Dance Naked” and the Kiss tribute album “Kiss My Ass, Classic Kiss Regrooved” broke into the album chart.
In 1996 Deep Purple performed “Smoke On the Water” at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland. It was the first time the band had played the song in the Swiss city that inspired the tune.
In 1999 Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall’s marriage ended in an annulment in a London court. The couple had been married for eight years, and had been together for 22 years.
In 2003 The White Stripes’ Jack White suffered a compound fracture to his left index finger in a car accident in Detroit.
In 2004 Courtney Love was taken to Bellevue Hospital in New York with what her attorney described as an unspecified gynecological problem. However, she was supposed to be in a Los Angeles court for an arraignment on a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. The L.A. judge issued a warrant for her arrest after she missed her court appearance.
Keith Richards, X frontman John Doe, and country singers Dwight Yoakam and Raul Malo were among the artists who performed at the first of two “Return to Sin City: A Tribute to Gram Parsons” concerts. The event, staged in Santa Barbara, California, raised money for the Musicians’ Assistance Program, an organization that helps musicians get treatment for drug and alcohol problems.
In 2006 Founding Commodores keyboardist Milan Williams died of cancer at Houston’s MD Anderson Hospital. He was 58.
In 2010 Carlos Santana became engaged during his concert in Chicago, popping the question to drummer Cindy Blackman four songs into the show. When she said “yes” and the couple kissed, the crowd cheered with approval.
In 2011 An exhibit about AC/DC opened at the Gateway to the Glens Museum in Kirriemuir [[Kih-REE-Myur]], Scotland, the hometown of the band’s late frontman Bon Scott, on what would have been the singer’s 65th birthday.
Former Motorhead guitarist Michael “Wurzel” Burston died of heart disease. He was 61. Wurzel was in Motorhead from 1984 until 1995.
In 2012 Chumbawamba announced that the group was disbanding.
In 2013 Nazareth was forced to cut their Canadian tour short when frontman Dan McCafferty collapsed on stage shortly after the start of their show in Cranbrook. McCafferty later revealed that he was suffering from the respiratory condition COPD, and that he was leaving the band because of his health problems.
In 2015 AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd was sentenced to eight months house arrest in New Zealand for possession of drugs and making threats to kill.
In 2019 The Beatles’ initial contract with Brian Epstein sold at auction for 343-thousand-dollars. The money was donated to the Ernest Hecht Charitable Foundation.
In 2024 Joe Bonsall of The Oak Ridge Boys died at the age of 76.
